About Create Your Dream Business

Welcome to Create Your Dream Business, a blog that helps professionals succeed in their businesses.

My name is Caroline Gikonyo and I'm a Life and Business Coach, speaker, author, and blogger.

From Researcher to Business Woman

Back in 2006, I had to decide between continuing in my profession as a social science researcher or go into business.

One thing I was sure of was that I was ready to get out of employment. Surprisingly, I wasn't scared about the shift because I had thought it out and it was the best option for me.

And so I handed in my resignation in January 2007 and left my job on 30th June 2007.

I opened my first business in November 2007 and it went under in April 2009. It took me almost 2 years to get over the shame, embarrassment, and shock of losing my business.

As I took time to get over the loss, I started exploring what else I could do without getting back into full time employment; starting with consulting as a researcher and moving into part time work as a personal development trainer.

One day, I read Brian Tracy's article on finding your true calling and used the exercise he outlined to identify what I had liked about all my previous jobs. My list had writing, training (and speaking), and mentoring my junior colleagues.

Within the same period I got a free coaching session and left the session thinking, "If this is how powerful coaching is, then I want to do this for the rest of my life!"

With more research, I got to find out that having a coaching practice would combine all my skills into one business

It took all my courage to start a new business and one thing I was sure about was that I never wanted other women to go through the experience of losing a business in the way I had.

So I sought the help of a mentor coach who helped me create my first coaching program and set up my business model.

I launched my second business New Dawn Solutions in 2011 and have been helping women succeed in their lives, careers and businesses since then.

UPDATE: In September 2017, I teamed up with 2 other coaches to form Biashara Threesixty. We merged our businesses and programs under one roof including the Create Your Dream Business program.

Lessons Learnt

  • Fear of failure or ridicule keeps a lot of people from getting into business.

  • 3 Ps for business startup success: Prepare, Prepare, Prepare!

  • Test your idea in the market and refine it before going full blast.

  • Shift from thinking like an employee and view your job as a business.

  • If you’re in business, don’t let fear of criticism keep you from marketing your business.

The worst thing someone can do is jump from employment into business without adequate preparation. Identify your ideal business and test it out. Grow it while still working before making the decision to quit your job.

Discover How You Can Start And Grow Your Business Even If You're Employed

The Create Your Dream Business Program Has 3 Components

  • 1

Identify what you love and turn it into a business.

You learn how to find the perfect business for you based on your sills, talents, knowledge, and experiences.

  • 2

Tap into your unique marketing style and build your business around it.

Most startup businesses fail because the founders fear, hate, or have no idea what to do about marketing. Marketing becomes a easier when you tap into your style.

  • 3

Grow your business one customer or client at a time.

It's always easier to sell to someone who's already bought from you before than it is to convince someone to buy from you for the first time. Take care of your customers and watch your business thrive.

As a result of the Create Your Dream Business program, I have now started an apparel business and I’m already selling back packs to customers. I have developed more confidence as a person and created my signature bag as well.
